May 6, 2024 By Saeed

Dear AKUAANA Members,

As the Executive Council of AKUAANA, we are requesting the approval of the revised Constitution and Bylaws of AKUAANA reflecting the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Aga Khan University signed on February 4th, 2023.

AKUAANA announces Ad Hoc Committee on Advocacy – Commitment to Raising Awareness & Supporting AKU Alumni

March 17, 2021 By Saeed

Dear Alumni:

By now, you may have heard the unfortunate news about Dr. Azam Ali, an alumnus of AKU Class of 1988 and one of the top ophthalmologists in Pakistan who became a target of belligerent violence (Video Links one and two).

Joining hands with APPNA, a joint statement was issued by AKUAANA in this regard to raise the voice and condemn such violence against healthcare professionals. We are grateful to APPNA’s President, an alumnus of AKU Class of 1999, Dr. Rizwan Khalid, for his prompt action. Several other letters and communications are underway in this regard.

Since addressing such matters requires coordination of efforts, thus to achieve optimum results in an efficient manner, the AKUAANA Executive Council (EC) has decided to set up an Ad Hoc Committee on Advocacy, which will remain dedicated to matters of social justice that are close to the heart of membership of AKUAANA. This ad hoc committee will present its report during the AKUAANA Annual Meeting (July 2021) and thereafter with mutual consultation, its status may be changed from an ad hoc committee to a permanent standing committee within AKUAANA, with the composition of its members changing from time to time. Dr. Syed H. Jafri has kindly agreed to Chair this ad hoc committee while Dr. Syed Bakhtiyar will serve as Co-Chair.

On behalf of AKUAANA EC, I am announcing the AKUAANA Ad Hoc Committee on Advocacy as follows:

AKUAANA Ad Hoc Committee on Advocacy, 2021

If you have a passion for social justice and would like to volunteer your valuable time to such causes, please reach out to the Chair of Ad Hoc Committee on Advocacy, Dr. Jafri, at shrjafri@hotmail.com.

Joint statement by AKUAANA and APPNA regarding recent violence against healthcare professionals in Pakistan

March 14, 2021 By Saeed

APPNA and AKUAANA strongly condemn the recent violence perpetrated against Dr Shahnila and Dr. Azam Ali at Liaquat National Hospital.

Dr. Azam Ali is a well-respected Ophthalmologist in Karachi. A graduate of AKU, he has trained and taught scores of medical students, residents and fellows. This heinous and abominable act against such highly respected physicians cannot simply be ignored. We demand an immediate investigation into the incident and that those involved be immediately held accountable. We also request the Provincial and Federal Governments to ensure a safe working environment for healthcare professionals across Sindh and Pakistan.

Given a long history of targeted violence against healthcare professionals in Pakistan, we strongly demand that concrete steps be taken towards upholding the rights of physicians, and providing the security required to practice medicine with diligence and expertise, and without fear of harassment and threat to life.

Faisal Cheema, MD
President, AKUAANA

Rizwan Khalid, MD

Applications for AKUAANA-JRM Scholarship, 2020-21

August 2, 2020 By Saeed

The AKUAANA-JRM Scholarship Fund is the result of a collaboration between AKUAANA and JRM (Jamshed-Rahim-Mannan) Foundation for Humanity, an Idaho based non-profit started by two AKU alumni, Dr. Fahim Rahim, ’97 and Dr. Naeem Rahim, ’98. We created this fund to provide financial relief for medical students pursuing electives in North America. You can find further details for eligibility for the scholarship here.

This year, the AKUAANA-JRM scholarship committee has decided to waive the requirement for an elective in an under-served area for the 2020 application because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Applicants can view a sample of the online application here. Please note that only submissions made via the online application portal for the AKUAANA-JRM Scholarship will be accepted.

This year, AKUAANA will be accepting applications from AKUMC Class of 2021 via our online application portal, which opened on August 10th, 2020. The deadline for submission will be 11:59 PM EST, September 30th, 2020.

Please feel free to contact Ammar Javed ’13 at ammar.aku@gmail.com for queries directed to the AKUAANA-JRM committee.

AKUAANA’s Request for COVID-19 Donations

March 22, 2020 By Saeed

Dear AKUAANA Family:

During these unprecedented times that have engulfed the entire globe, we have entered an ever-changing phase of reality which shall continue to impact all aspects of our lives.

Many of you must already be fighting in the front-lines by taking care of your patients in these trying times. And some of you have been leading from the front within the domains of public health, policy making, social welfare and entrepreneurship. Our alma mater in Pakistan is also leading by example under its dynamic leadership.

Hailing from Pakistan and living in our adopted homeland of USA, our responsibilities are manifold. The needs are acute and the demands are inestimable. We have a sacred duty to rise up and address these challenges head on, together! At AKUAANA, we have identified the following platforms through which donations can be made:

1. AKU Foundation
• Regular donations can be made at AKU Foundation
• For Zakat donations, please donate at The i-Care Foundation (Choose “The Patients Behbud Society for AKUH” and add “COVID-19 Testing” as free text.)

2. Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America [APPNA]

Whereas AKU Foundation is helping with COVID-19 testing kits in Pakistan, APPNA is primarily helping with food pantries across USA as well as other relief efforts in Pakistan including providing PPE gear to the healthcare workers.

On behalf of the Executive Council of AKUAANA, I would like to urge all of you to support these relief efforts to the best of your abilities. Your donations will be of paramount importance in ensuring that all critical relief efforts continue, and that, as the demand grows, the capacity to help also does. All charitable donations will be considered tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

If you or anyone else you know, within AKUAANA family, is in need of help, please immediately inform us so that we can pool resources to help.

Keep working hard and stay safe. You all remain in our prayers and thoughts!

Most Sincerely,

Faisal H. Cheema, AKU ’2000 | President, AKUAANA

Secretary: Haresh Kumar, AKU ’03 | Treasurer: Tauseef-ur-Rehman, AKU ’07 | Immediate Past President: Namirah Jamshed, AKU ’96
