AKU Alumni Regional Upper-Midwest Reunion, March 2016

July 30, 2016 By Saeed

Ameer Ali Khowaja, ’06 and Tauseef ur Rehman, ’07 hosted a fantastic regional reunion for AKU alumni in the Upper-Midwest (MN/WI/SD/ND) region, on March 19, 2016. They had a lovely turnout, with more than 20 alumni attending the event. I am sharing below a brief recap of the event, which the hosts were very kind to share with us.

Abdul Basit Saeed, ’07
Web Manager, AKUAANA

AKU Alumni Regional Upper-Midwest Reunion, March 2016

I came to Minnesota in the summer of 2009 for my Internal Medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center along with Tauseef Ur Rehman, ’07 and Abdullah Ladha, ’07. The substantial presence of AKU MC alumni in the state was a very pleasant surprise for all of us. From the apartment hunt in the first month of internship to Iftar invitations during the times we felt most homesick, their support was truly heartening.

As years passed, we got to know how far and wide the local AKU community is. Geographically from International Falls to Rochester, academically from private practices to tenured faculty and class wise from 1991 to 2015.

Knowing so many alumni over the years, we had been thinking of arranging a formal upper Midwest centered reunion for quite some time. The evolving role of AKUAANA especially motivated us to come up with a program that would connect the alumni and have a meaningful impact.

As the first step, we set out to find the exact size of the local AKU community. It turned out there are almost 55 alumni in Minnesota alone, with the following class distribution.

AKU Alumni Regional Upper-Midwest Reunion, March 2016Getting encouragement from above, we planned a reunion on March 19, 2016 at Eagan Civic Arena, MN. We are very grateful to our alumni who took time to attend, in spite of unexpectedly cold weather and more importantly, the Pakistan-India T20 world cup match!

We were fortunate to have Dr. Irfan Altafullah (one of the founding faculty members in the division of Neurology at AKU) as a special guest.

The main event comprised of a series of presentations, with opening remarks and moderation by Tauseef Ur Rehman, ’07. We were fortunate to have a very inspiring video message by Dr. Farhat Abbas, Dean of Medical College. A very special thanks to Dr. Abbas and the office of Alumni Affairs who took the time and effort to records his personalized message for the event.

Amin Rehmatullah (’91) shared community and social engagements by alumni, particularly Muslim Health Professionals of Minnesota. Sabeen Askari, ’94, Secretary of MAPP (MN chapter of APPNA), presented the vision and activities of APPNA and MAPP. Ameer Khowaja, ’06 discussed the objectives and initiatives by AKUAANA. He talked about how MN AKU alumni can be more integrated and take active role in projects launched by AKUAANA. Sani Kizilbash, ’03 shared his initiative of ‘AKU – Giving Back‘ and its impact in connecting current AKU students with AKU alumni. He also discussed other potential areas where the initiative can play a crucial role, such as career advancement and research opportunities. Last but not the least, concluding remarks were delivered by Dr. Irfan Altafullah. Taking the attendees back in time, he shared fond memories of the initial days of AKUMC with treasured pictures and stories of the student life of the most senior medical school class. All of this while attendees enjoyed food, desserts and of course, tea.

On behalf of the organizing team Tauseef Ur Rehman, ’07, Zunera Tauseef, Ameer Khowaja, ’06 and Rubina Sajwani, ’08, we thank all the AKU alumni for their presence at the reunion. We hope that with each reunion, the AKU community in MN will become more organized and will be able to take more active role in local as well as national initiatives.

Volunteers for Regional AKU Reunions, 2016

April 13, 2016 By Saeed

AKUAANA Reunion 2014

Dear AKU Alumni,

We are looking for volunteers across US and Canada who can help coordinate regional reunions for AKU Medical College Alumni.

The role of the coordinators will be to help invite AKU Alumni within an approximate 100-mile radius of the venue. They would also be instrumental in arranging the program details for the event.

To clarify, the coordinators will not be financially responsible to host the events. For example, the arrangement can be made at a restaurant and people can pay for themselves. If any coordinator wants to host any event themselves, they are welcome to do so but there is no obligation to do so.

A similar and successful mini reunion was arranged last month in Minnesota and Dallas, and another one is coming up in Northern Virginia. Three more reunions are in the process of being planned in the NY/NJ area, Chicago and St. Louis.

We are hoping to have volunteers so we can have similar events in other parts of US and Canada.

The reason for having these mini reunions is to promote not only social and professional networking, but also to explore the future of our alumni body and collaboration in possible future community and charitable projects (in the US or Pakistan) using the AKUAANA platform.

We hope that you consider becoming a volunteer to expand the number of local reunions. If you would like AKUAANA or its officers to help in anyway, please feel free to reach out to us.

Thank you

Habib Chotani
President, AKUAANA

Alumni Reunion, 2015: AKUAANA Grows

August 28, 2015 By Saeed

Dear Alumni,

Congratulations on a very successful AKUAANA Reunion in Orlando, Florida on Friday August 14th, 2015. We hosted the largest gathering ever in Orlando, with 170 participants and graduates from every class from 1988-2006. The classes of 2005, 1995 and 1990 celebrated their class milestones and in true “Mighty Ninety” fashion, the most senior class stole the show.

The reunion was very well attended by University leaders including Dr. Farhat Abbas (Dean, AKU Medical College), Mr. Zahir Janmohamed (Director General, Resource Development) and Mr. Louis Ariano (Associate Vice Provost & University Registrar). In fact, Dean Abbas had just been chosen as a recipient of the Sitara-E-Imtiaz and received a standing ovation.

The General Body meeting was separated from the Reunion Dinner for the first time and took place on Friday afternoon (minutes available). This was done to allow for alumni-only discussions and crucial decision-making. Constitutional changes were approved after a vigorous discussion; elections results were announced and finally financial and membership details were examined (financial report available). We then spent an hour hosting a round table with Dean Abbas, Mr. Janmohamed and Mr. Ariano. The roundtable meeting allowed for an open discussion between University leaders and alumni.

We are now the 4th largest component society at APPNA and the fastest growing in terms of numbers. The leaders of APPNA highlighted our continuing influence on the larger society when they visited with us during dinner. Our guest speaker Alex Kronemer, Founder and Executive Producer for Unity Productions Foundation spoke to us about tolerance and the importance of dialogue.

The AKUAANA Executive Council, 2015

The AKUAANA Executive Council, 2015
L to R: Atif Shafqat (Secretary), Shazia Hussain (Treasurer), Faial Qureshi (President)

After a lively dinner, we sang and danced the night away with Atif Aslam. The classes of 2005, 1995 and 1990 hosted their private celebrations on Saturday the 15th. The evening banquet was very well attended, where Umer Sharif and Ali Haider entertained us. Please visit our Facebook Page to view pictures from the reunion, tag yourselves and like the page as well.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The next reunion will be held on August 12th at the Gaylord Resort in Washington, DC. Our new Executive Council will be Amber Syed (1994) as Treasurer, Rehan Khan (1994) as Secretary and Habib Chotani (1995) as President. They will be hosting us in DC where the classes 1991, 1996 and 2006 will be celebrating their respective milestones.

We look forward to seeing you there, and remember to buy tickets and book hotel reservations as soon as they become available.

Thank you again!

Our best regards,

Faisal Qureshi, President
Atif Shafqat, Secretary
Shazia Hussain, Treasurer
