First Female APPNA GHAR Established in New Jersey

February 15, 2014 By AdministratoR

APPNA

Dear APPNA Members,

I am delighted to inform you about the establishment of the first female “APPNA GHAR” in New Jersey. APPNA GHAR is one of the facilities born out of a tremendous need for incoming new graduates from Pakistan to have a subsidized residential facility where they can live easily, while preparing and taking the CSA (Clinical Skills Assessment), take interviews and improve their credentials by gaining US clinical experience. Before the creation of these facilities in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia and New York, these candidates were at a disadvantage; they could not afford the high expenditure to stay in big cities to take the CSA exam on time or to obtain volunteer research work in US, and therefore ended up with a less than competitive CV. As a result many of them went unmatched despite obtaining scores in the 90th percentile and spending a fortune during this lengthy process.

We have already set up a two bedroom apartment in central New Jersey, “Rahway”, half a mile from train station, 30 minutes ride to New York City, 90 minutes ride to Philadelphia, PA. The House can accommodate 6-8 students at a time. We have students living there while going through interview process at the Tri-State area.

Just to remind everyone that APPNA New Jersey Chapter is a 501(c)3 tax free organization, so all donations are tax free. We will send you a letter at the end of the year.

Best Regards,

APPNA National Health Care Day, 2013

September 18, 2013 By AdministratoR

The fourth Annual National Health Care Day (NHCD) will be held on Saturday November 23rd, 2013, the weekend before Thanksgiving. This year we hope to extend the scope to include community centers, churches, soup kitchens etc. in addition to our clinics, hospitals and mosques where we have traditionally held the NHCD previously. Some of the APPNA Chapters traditionally have actively participated in soup kitchens and in bringing a smile to the faces of needy during the Holiday Season. This will provide members of APPNA an opportunity to become a partner with our larger communities this holiday season, and to form the essential partnership with the communities we work and live in.

We have updated the APPNA website with historic information about the National Health Care Initiative, and are highlighting all the Free Clinics that APPNA Chapters run on regular basis. Additionally a large number of APPNA members volunteer at free clinics, and, community health events, in their local community centers, mosques, hospitals etc. Their efforts largely go unrecognized by the community and APPNA itself. We have created a section on APPNA website where the efforts of these individuals and the centers where they volunteer are recognized. Kindly send us reports of your centers with photographs to include in the National Health Care Initiative (NHCI) section of the APPNA website.

The NHCI would not have been possible without the tremendous support of APPNA members and hundreds of volunteers across the country. We salute your sense of service and giving, and, look forward to another very successful year of providing free healthcare and health education to our communities.

Message from APPNA SWDR

April 8, 2013 By AdministratoR

APPNA SWDR

Dr. Manzoor Tariq, APPNA President, 2011 and Social Welfare and Dr. Nadeem Ahmed, APPNA Disaster Relief Committee, 2011 member

  • Please Support APPNA Social Welfare Disaster Relief Committee 2013 Projects
  • Please donate for Trauma Care Improvement Initiative

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

In the past, the Social Welfare Disaster Relief Committee has focused on relief efforts especially in Pakistan, but this year we have planned to expand our horizon and have decided to focus on health care issues and are getting involved in:

  1. Education/Training/Certification of Emergency/Trauma Care
  2. Health care initiatives with long term health benefits by improving awareness and education on Heart Diseases, Mental Health, Hepatitis C, Diabetes/Obesity.

SWDR needs your help and support for these initiatives. Please donate generously for these initiatives and make a real change in health care in Pakistan.

APPNA Trauma Care Initiative

Goal: Need your help and support to raise $100,000 to train and certify 10,000 first responders and emergency department physicians/nurses (BCLS/PTC/ATLS) to improve Trauma care in Pakistan

In Pakistan, > 2 million accidents are recorded each year leading to >50,000 deaths and > 500,000 injuries from trauma. There is also alarming increase in morbidity and mortality from non-accidental trauma and violence. Unfortunately pre-hospital trauma care providers including first responders lack any training. Situation in emergency departments is no different. Majority of health care providers lack ATLS, PTC, BCLS or ACLS certification.

Goals of the Project: Cost effective basic training (BCLA/PCT) to first responders (ambulance teams, police, volunteers, taxi drivers, teachers, paramedics etc.) to provide the initial help on the scene by individuals trained in basic principles of safe rescue, first aid and transportation. Training and certification of doctors and nurses (ATLS/PTC) working in emergency departments with recertification every 3 years. Establishment of Trauma care protocols and development of Trauma Registry to create reliable data for outcome analysis and to implement improvements in the system.

How to achieve these Goals: Will collaborate with Society of Emergency Medicine in Pakistan to provide training and education and will collaborate with NGO (including Aman and Emed) to provide personals and will collaborate with hospitals and alumni to provide local resources and equal partnership. APPNA SWDR will raise funds and will also apply for grants to help in resources.

We will train and certify >10000 individuals/year: Training will include BCLS or PTC certification for first responders and PTC/ATLS certification for health care professionals (physicians, student, trainees and nurses). Will start with hospitals in major cities including Peshawar, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Karachi but will expend initiative to throughout the country with the help of NGO, medical societies and alumni. We have negotiated cost of each trainee (BCLS/PTC) to be $10/person (2 day course requirements including stay, meal, syllabus etc.) thus cost of training/certifying 1000 individuals/center will be $10000/center/year (Rs.100,0000/year/center). We plan to raise $100,000/year and to continue this project for 3-5 years.

Update on APPNA’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

November 16, 2012 By AdministratoR

Hurricane SandyHurricane Sandy has been a disaster of mammoth proportions. More than 8 million people have been affected. The damage in New York alone is estimated to be over 30 billion dollars. Several APPNA members and their families in New York and New Jersey have been personally affected and their life is just returning to near normalcy.

APPNA is helping with relief efforts in Brighton beach, New York and Jersey Shores where over 1000 Pakistani Americans have also been affected. These people need our urgent help as they are desperately in need of heaters and blankets. Following APPNA efforts are under way:

  • APPNA is distributing 500 heaters free of charge to Hurricane victims in Brighton beach, New York
  • Food trays with APPNA LABELS were sent to Jersey shores to serve 400 people.
  • Jackets, socks, gloves and canned food were delivered through Toms River Mosque in New Jersey.

These are the initial efforts. APPNA plans to do much more for all Hurricane affected Americans in coming weeks. Please contribute generously for the storm victims. You can sponsor any of the following:

  • Meals for $3 each
  • Blankets for $20 each
  • Heaters for $20 each
  • Houses Clean up and Repair for $800 each
